Nure Onna is a youkai with the body of a python and the head of a woman. Nure Onna causes quite a lot of fear for residents of coastal and riverside areas. Nure Onna translates to "Wet Woman", because most of the time this youkai is underwater, waiting for the unfortunate victims to come near the water to eat. The Nure Onna is a youkai shaped like an amphibian with the head of a woman and the body of a snake, eyes like snake eyes, sharp fangs, and long flowing hair. Body at least 30m long, full of strong muscles, Nure Onna easily wraps its prey and drags it into the water for meat. Its favorite food is human flesh and blood. In particular, Nure Onna also has a deadly look. Anyone who looked into Nure Onna's eyes was immediately paralyzed (or was too scared). It is no exaggeration to say that Nure Onna can be compared to the Japanese version of Medusa.
The only way to avoid being prey to Nure Onna was probably to stay out of the water, but that didn't seem to be enough to escape this terrifying youkai. Nure Onna can recklessly go to shallow water such as fields, swamps... to ambush her prey.
In some other versions, Nure Onna even has the ability to disguise herself as a human. It will appear in the form of a beautiful young woman, holding a baby in her arms. Nure Onna will give the baby to you and then plunge into the sea to commit suicide. As soon as you run to the water's edge, another terrifying youkai, the Ushi Oni (sea monster, cow head, spider body) will rise up to pounce on you. Are you going to run? The baby you are holding in your arms transformed by the Nure Onna will become heavier and heavier and make you unable to move.
