Korean folk myths say that most dragons were originally Imugis. There are a few different versions of Korean folklore depicting imugis aspiring to be full-fledged dragons. Koreans think that an Imugi can become a real dragon, or yong or mireu, if it catches a Yeouiju that has fallen from heaven. According to other accounts, Imugi was a primeval dragon that had to survive a thousand years to become a complete dragon. In either case, they are thought to be large, benevolent, python-like creatures that live in water or caves, and their sighting is associated with good luck.
Another explanation states that , it was because some members of the Dragon clan had sinned against the heavens so they were punished. descended as Imugi forever. The legend of the Imugi says that the sun god gave the Imugi their power through a human girl, which would be transformed into the Imugi on her 17th birthday. Legend also said that a dragon-shaped mark would be found on the shoulder of the girl, revealing that she was the Imugi in human form.
