Appearance:
He appears in art as a giant serpent. Apep was first mentioned in the Eighth Dynasty, and he was honored in the names of the Fourteenth Dynasty king ‘Apepi and of the Greater Hyksos king Apophis
While in most texts Apep is described as a giant snake, he is sometimes depicted as a crocodile.
The few descriptions of Apep’s origin in myth usually demonstrate that it was born after Ra, usually from his umbilical cord. But Apep was commonly believed to have existed from the beginning of time in the waters of Nu of primeval chaos
Personality:
It is a powerful, cruel creature that symbolizes chaos and darkness
Intelligence: undefined
Legend:
Ra was the solar deity, bringer of light, and thus the upholder of Ma’at. Apep was viewed as the greatest enemy of Ra, and thus was given the title Enemy of Ra, and also “the Lord of Chaos”.
Although many serpents symbolized divinity and royalty, Apep threatened the underworld and symbolized evil. It was thought that his terrifying roar would cause the underworld to rumble. Myths sometimes say that Apep was trapped there, because he had been the previous chief god overthrown by Ra, or because he was evil and had been imprisoned.
The time of the battle between the god Ra and Apep was from dusk to dawn. When dawn broke, that was when the barque sailed out of hell, and Ra was purified again by the eastern goddess Labet.
Each night Apopis encountered Re at a particular hour in the sun god’s ritual journey through the underworld in his divine boat barkque.
Apep is a demon that has the ability to hypnotize all gods, except for the evil god Seth. So, Seth, who rode as guardian in the front of Ra’s boat barkque, attacked him with a spear and slew him.
However, the next night Apep, who could not be permanently subdued, was there again appear to attack. This monster often captures the boat by squeezing divine boat barkque by its large body. Or it would stir up the primordial waters of Nun, creating floods to sink the boat.
